The Red tailed Hawk is the largest of the hawk family. The Red tail is one of the fiercest birds of prey and make extremely good hunting birds. The upper-parts of the bird are normally dark brown with light under-parts, usually with a dark band on the belly. The Red tailed Hawk is easily recognised in flight due to the distinctive russet red tail, usually with a black terminal bar. An extremely powerful bird, the slow wing beats can propel this bird to great speeds.

Adult males : 2 lb, ( 900 g ) to 3 lb, ( 1350 g ).
Adult females : 2 lb 8 oz, ( 1250 g ) to 4 lb, ( 1800 g ).
Fully grown, wing span can be up to 56 inches, ( 142 centimetres ).

The Red tailed Hawk is found in North America from as far north as Alaska and as far south as Panama. They are not traditionally migratory birds, but do tend to gravitate towards areas with abundant supplies of prey depending on the season. Normally found in grassland, marsh or shrub areas. Easily adaptable to desert or forest environments.

Small rodents, rabbits, snakes, lizards and pheasants.
