The Harris’ Hawk is one of the most attractive of the hawk family, both in looks and manner. The Harris’ Hawk is easily identified by the chestnut, white and black feathers, with a distinctive band on the tail. This bird is a quick learner, has an easy-going and forgiving nature, and makes an excellent hunting bird. Harris’ Hawks can be extremely vocal when hungry or annoyed and have a natural hatred of dogs.

Harris’ Hawks were originally located in tropical Central America. Moving north, they have established themselves in the American south west, mainly in the deserts of New Mexico, Arizona, and south east Texas. Normally a desert dwelling bird, the Harris’ Hawk can adapt to the most inhospitable of climates.

The Harris’ Hawk will hunt and eat rabbit, hare, jackrabbit, squirrels and gophers. Also known to take birds in flight.
