Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)

The Golden Eagle is the largest bird of prey resident in the UK. This large bird is easily identifiable by the sheer size and wingspan alone, however, the uninitiated often mistake the common buzzard for an eagle due to it’s apparent large size and the rarity of actually seeing a Golden Eagle for comparison. Young birds have large areas of white on the under wing, this turns to dark barred grey as the bird matures, however, adult birds can have varying amounts of white on the wing, irrespective of age. The upper parts of the Golden Eagle are predominantly reddish brown to golden brown in colour. The powerful wing beats and long periods of gliding at high level make this another identifying feature.

Found in mountainous regions of the UK., predominantly in the north west of Scotland. A rarely sighted bird due to it’s preference for remote locations. Normally a cliff dweller, the Golden Eagle may be found in high, remote wooded areas.

Rabbits, hares, game birds, and carrion. Golden Eagles have been known to bring down small deer.
