The Tawny is a medium sized owl which has no “ear tufts” and has dark brown eyes. The upper colour is generally grey-brown above with darker mottling and distinctive white-cream spots on the upper-wing coverts. The under colour is lighter with darker streaks and barring. This owl has noticeable pale short eyebrows and a dark crown bordered with white.

The Tawny Owl is widespread in Europe from Britain and Portugal across to eastern China. It can be found in woodland, forests, parks and gardens.

The Tawny’s diet includes a wide variety of prey including mice, voles, frogs, birds, insects, earthworms and even fish.
