A medium sized owl with prominent “ear tufts” the upper-parts are dusky grey-brown with pale spots, the under-parts are whitish and finely barred. The African Spotted Eagle Owl’s facial disk is whitish to pale ochre. A more rufous morph exists in more arid areas.

This owl is found in Africa, south of the equator, and some parts of the Arabian peninsula. The natural habitat is savannah, rocky outcrops, scrub, open and semi-open woodland and semi-desert land.

The African Spotted Eagle Owl’s natural diet consists of invertebrates, small mammals, birds and reptiles.
