The Chaco Owl’s upper parts are a dark brown with fine off-white barring on the head, neck and crown. On the owl’s back, the barring is more prominent and the tail is barred with a light buff colour. The under parts are of a light brown / buff, densely barred with white and black bars. The eyes are a dark brown / black.

This owl is a wholly nocturnal bird, which inhabits dense forests or semi-open forests in the low lands. It will roost during the day in trees usually close to the trunk or sometimes in a natural hole in the tree It can be found throughout Chile and south Argentina to Tierra del Fuego and has occasionally been reported on the Falkland Islands.

Principally small rodents and birds but it will also take small reptiles and various insects.
