call

barn_owl_lg[1]-000.jpg

The barn owl can readily be distinguished from other owls by its unique shape, colour and voice, it is primarily white with buff, yellow and tawny shadings. It’s face is arresting, there are no ear tufts, the eyes and beak are completely encircled by a heart-shaped facial ruff of white, rimmed with tan while slightly curved feathers radiate out from the small, dark eyes.

They are found throughout Europe, America, most of Africa, India & Australia. The ideal habitat is open countryside that contains a good mixture of rough grasslands, marshland, scrub land, young tree plantations, hedgerows, edge of woodland & field margins left alongside hedgerows.

The main food intake is vole, other small rodents include shrews, wood mice and young rats, which the Barn Owl will prey upon with silent flight.
