Asian Wood Owl (Strix leptogrammica)

Description & Identification

The Asian Wood-Owl is also known as “the brown wood owl” and is a medium owl which ranges over much of South Asia. The upper-parts are barred with dark brown and some white. Its crown is dark brown with a partial white facial disk and dark rings around the eyes. The chest is brown becoming paler towards belly with fine dark barring. The wings are long & broad, the tail rather short, the legs rather long, stout, and densely feathered, and the plumage is exceptionally soft and dense, this owl has no ear tufts and has dark eyes.

Height : 34 – 55 cm (13 – 21.5”)
Weight : 500 - 700 g (1.1 – 1.55 lb)

Natural Habitat & Location

The Asian Wood Owl can be found all over southern Asia, including S. India, Sri Lanka, South Myanmar down to the Malay peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra. It’s natural habitat is lowland tropical rain forest.

Natural Diet

The Asian Wood Owl’s natural diet includes small mammals, birds and reptiles.
