Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus)

The Lanner Falcon is about the size of a Peregrine but is longer in the wing and tail and slimmer in the body so it looks less chunky, they have rufous napes and crowns with white colouring over their under-parts. These are streaked and spotted with brown or black. Their heads have narrow black caps and there are two stripes below their eyes.

Native to Africa, Italy, Sicily, Greece and a minor amount in Asia, the Lanner prefers to inhabit rocky areas and steep cliffs around meadows, they will also nest on coastal cliffs, with the actual nests being on the cliff face or sometimes in trees.

Lanners eat mainly small to medium sized birds. Small birds may be taken in the air in flights at speeds in excess of 100 mph while larger ones will be attacked while on the ground.
